One Step Back
by on January 25, 1999 in Poetry

If I could just hang out
One step back
I think I’d see the world
As it should be
Cause it’s when I get away
That I don’t question day to day
Yeah one step back
Looks like the place for me

Well teach me how to go backwards
Cause all I know now’s straight ahead
Help me to unlearn the things
I was taught and now I’ve said
Cause I know that I’m not seeing
The world like I used to
And I’m standing so close now
That I don’t know what to do

Is that one step back I see
When I look in your eyes?
Is that how you maintain
Your clarity?
Is that the simple difference
Between you and I?
Does that one step back
Allow you to love me?

Well teach me how to go backwards
Cause all I know now’s straight ahead
Help me to unlearn the things
I was taught and now I’ve said
Cause I know I’m not seeing
The world like I used to
And I’m standing so close now
I don’t know what to do

If I could just hang out
One step back
I’d be looking out to see
So much more
And I wouldn’t pick to pieces
All the things that make you whole
Yeah one step back
And you I do adore
